Besides being a little disappointed in the fact that we could not find any fair stand selling a cheeseburger with chocolate covered bacon sandwiched between two doughnuts, the food was still definitely the spotlight of our visit. Our little Iowa family (Matthew, Caroline, Phil) shared lots of yummy treats including a turkey leg, friend chicken on a stick (it also had onions and pickles), fresh lemonade, and a raspberry shortcake.
We should probably introduce Phil to the blog--blog this is Phil. Lifelong friend, groomsmen, Italiano. Phil even got to show off his John Deere knowledge when we went through the extensive outdoor museum :)
Cruising through the fair we saw the many extremes of life. If you're wondering if we saw baby pigs being born live, yes we did. Maybe you're wondering if we saw the year's largest pumpkin weighing in at over 1,000 pounds...we saw that too. You might be surprised to know that we also saw sculptures made out of butter. Cows, people, other livestock. Amazing.
Sadly, we missed the Reba concert that night, and were super surprised to hear about all of the other awesome acts the fair was bringing in. Casting Crowns had played earlier in the week along with Maroon 5 and some other famous country people we didn't really know. And Janet Jackson was performing the next night!!
First visit to Des Moines (for Caroline and Matthew that is): success!
